While I was waiting to go in for my tattoo, the shop's phone rang. The guy behind the counter picked it up and spoke to the would-be customer. The call seemed very run of the mill with price inquiries then things took a turn which sickened me.
The caller asked the minimum age for piercing someone. She was told that certain piercing could be done from the age of 12, most from 14 but all under 16 needed a parent or guardian to be present and I.D. to be provided.
Things seemed to turn and the guy behind the counter became quite stern and refused the booking point blank and would accept no argument on the matter (go him!)
What drove him to refuse the job and get so shirty? A mother (!) wanted to bring her nine year old (!!) daughter in to have her belly button pierced (!!!).
When we discussed it, all that heard the call were disgusted. Let's be very clear about this: a pierced belly button is considered to be a sexual thing. Not only that, it take considerable maintenance to make sure that it does not become infected and as the child is still growing, it will grow out.
Why a mother would want to do any of that to their daughter is beyond me. What saddens me more is the 100% surety I have that they would have found someone to pierce that poor child.
Shame on you, whoever you are....
Also: I didn't get the job. Very disheartening but it just means I keep looking ;)
On the writing side of things...
I did quite a bit of work on Blue Jackets #4. It now stands at 16907 words but the seemingly small growth in word count hides the MASSIVE amount of editing I undertook today. Pleased with the overall progress.
